London to New York flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?
London to New York is one of the busiest long-haul corridors in the world, and it is also one where passengers most often misunderstand their rights. The great-circle distance is approximately 5,500 km, which puts the route firmly in the top compensation band.
If the flight you were booked on delivers you to New York three or more hours later than scheduled, or is cancelled with less than fourteen days' notice, the operating airline may owe you a fixed payment on top of any refund, re-routing or overnight care it arranges. That payment is unrelated to what you paid for the ticket, so an economy seat and a business seat on the same aircraft attract the same amount.

Check what you're owed
How much you could be owed
Because the route exceeds 3,500 km, it sits in the highest band: £520 per passenger under UK261, or €600 under EU261. Article 7(2) is worth knowing about here. On flights of this length, an airline that re-routes you and gets you to New York less than four hours after your original scheduled arrival may reduce the payment by half — to £260 or €300. Beyond four hours late, the full amount stands. Compensation is per passenger, so a couple travelling together are each entitled to their own payment, and children on their own paid seats count too.
How late you reach New York decides the figure:
| Arrival in New York | UK261 compensation per passenger |
|---|---|
| Three or more hours late | £520 |
| Re-routed by the airline, landing less than four hours late | £260 if the airline halves it |
Is the New York to London return flight covered too?
Leaving London, UK261 applies to every operator — British, American or otherwise — because the departure is from a UK airport. That is the straightforward direction. Coming back is where the coverage gap sits: a New York to London flight operated by a US carrier is not covered by UK261, because an arrival into the UK is only protected when the operating airline is a UK or EU carrier. EU261 does not cover this route in either direction. The identical route flown by a UK or EU airline is covered by UK261. Same city pair, same delay, different outcome depending on whose aircraft you are sitting in — so check the operating carrier on your return leg, not just the marketing code on your ticket.
Which airlines fly London to New York, and which one owes you?
The corridor is served daily by UK and US carriers from Heathrow and Gatwick into JFK and Newark, typically including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Delta and United. Schedules and codeshares change from season to season, so identify the airline that actually operated your flight — that is the one with the legal obligation, regardless of who sold you the ticket.
How to claim
Run the free eligibility check with your flight number and date. We confirm the direction, the operating carrier and whether the flight is covered, then calculate the band and whether any Article 7(2) reduction is likely to be argued. If the airline pleads extraordinary circumstances — severe weather, an air traffic control restriction or a security incident — it must prove both the event and that it took all reasonable steps to limit the impact, and we test that rather than accept it. You pay nothing while the claim runs. Our fee is a single fixed €39 success fee, charged only after your compensation has been recovered.
How do you claim London to New York flight delay compensation?
Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your London to New York flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.
A London to New York compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.
For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers London to New York cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.
What a delayed flight pays
| Flight distance | Example | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dublin → London | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | London → Athens | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | London → New York | €600 |
Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).
