London to Dubai flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?
London to Dubai is one of the busiest long-haul corridors from the UK, flown from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted with large aircraft at high frequency. The great-circle distance is approximately 5,500 km, placing the route in the top compensation band.
Compensation is triggered by an arrival at your final destination three or more hours late, a cancellation with less than fourteen days' notice, or involuntary denied boarding.
Because the UAE is outside the UK and EU, the direction of travel and the operating carrier determine coverage, and the difference between the two directions catches out more passengers on this route than almost anything else.

How much you could be owed
Over 3,500 km, so the top band: £520 per passenger under UK261. Article 7(2) is relevant on a sector of this length: an airline that re-routes you and delivers you to Dubai less than four hours after your original scheduled arrival may halve the payment to £260. Beyond four hours late, the full amount stands. The payment is per passenger and independent of cabin or fare, and it sits alongside — not instead of — your rights to a refund or re-routing and to meals and a hotel during a long wait.
Is Emirates covered on the Dubai to London return?
Departing London, UK261 applies to every operating airline, Emirates included, because the departure is from a UK airport. The return direction is the gap: a Dubai to London flight is covered only when the operating carrier is a UK or EU airline. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic inbound are covered; Emirates inbound is not, because a UAE carrier arriving into the UK falls outside both UK261 and EU261. A return ticket on this route therefore carries different rights in each direction, and the operating carrier on the inbound leg is the first thing to check.
Direction and airline decide it:
| Flight | Airline | Covered by UK261? |
|---|---|---|
| London to Dubai | Any airline, Emirates included | Yes: up to £520 |
| Dubai to London | British Airways or Virgin Atlantic | Yes: up to £520 |
| Dubai to London | Emirates | No |
Which airlines fly London to Dubai?
The corridor is typically served by Emirates, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, with codeshares layered on top. The obligation attaches to the airline that actually operated the flight, so establish that from your boarding pass rather than the booking reference.
Can the airline refuse a London to Dubai claim?
Send the flight number and date and we confirm direction, operator and coverage, then calculate the band and whether an Article 7(2) reduction is arguable. If the airline pleads extraordinary circumstances — severe weather, an air traffic control restriction, a security incident — it must prove both the event and the reasonable measures it took; a strike by its own crew does not qualify. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed €39 success fee — the same whether you're owed €250 or €600. No win, no fee.
How do you claim London to Dubai flight delay compensation?
Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your London to Dubai flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.
A London to Dubai compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.
For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers London to Dubai cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.
What a delayed flight pays
| Flight distance | Example | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dublin → London | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | London → Athens | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | London → New York | €600 |
Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).
