Palma de Mallorca flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is one of Europe's biggest holiday gateways, with heavy seasonal schedules from Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Eurowings serving the Balearics' summer peak. Your rights do not depend on the fare: EU261 attaches a fixed payment of €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km when you reach your final destination three or more hours late.

A cancellation notified with less than fourteen days' notice and involuntary denied boarding trigger the same amounts, per passenger — so a family of four claims four times.

Which rules apply at Palma de Mallorca

Spain is an EU member state, so EU261 governs every departure from Palma whichever airline operates it, charters and package-holiday flights included. Arrivals from outside the EU/EEA are covered only when an EU/EEA or UK carrier operates the flight — though most Palma traffic is intra-European, so both directions of a typical holiday trip are usually protected, with the UK-departing leg sitting under UK261 and its sterling bands instead.

What to do at the airport

Ask the airline to state the reason in writing and keep the app notification or email. Record when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination, since that timestamp decides the three-hour test. From two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul, you are owed meals, refreshments, a means of communication and a hotel with transfers if kept overnight, whatever the cause. If the airline provides nothing during a long summer-evening wait, spend reasonably and keep the receipts.

Why do Palma flights run late in summer, and which delays pay?

Palma's traffic peaks hard in summer, and the leisure carriers that dominate it run tight aircraft rotations, so a delay early in an aircraft's day frequently persists to the last flight. Mediterranean thunderstorms, strong wind episodes and air traffic flow restrictions across busy holiday-season airspace all feature regularly, as do late inbound aircraft from congested airports elsewhere. Technical faults, crew running out of hours and consolidation of thin flights sit within the airline's control. Where extraordinary circumstances are claimed, the airline must prove them: its own crew striking is generally not extraordinary, while air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are.

Claiming for a flight from Palma de Mallorca

Run the free eligibility check and we confirm the governing regulation and the band. We submit the claim, chase the airline and challenge refusals that arrive without evidence; unresolved Spanish disputes can be escalated to AESA, the Spanish aviation safety and security agency and national enforcement body for EU261. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

How to claim Palma de Mallorca compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your flight from Palma de Mallorca and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

A Palma de Mallorca compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers Palma de Mallorca cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my package holiday flight from Palma covered?

Yes. EU261 applies to charter and package flights operated by carriers such as TUI or Jet2 just as it does to scheduled services. The claim is against the operating airline and is separate from anything the tour operator owes you.

Who enforces EU261 in Spain?

AESA, the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea, is Spain's national enforcement body for EU261. A claim an airline wrongly refuses can be escalated there, and we handle that step for you.

My cheap fare to Palma was less than the compensation. Do I get the full amount?

Yes. EU261 amounts are fixed by distance, not by ticket price, so a low seasonal fare can still produce a €250 or €400 payment if you arrived three or more hours late for a reason within the airline's control.
