Alicante-Elche Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) serves the Costa Blanca and is dominated by low-cost and leisure traffic, with Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 running dense schedules to the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. The price of your ticket has no bearing on your rights: EU261 attaches €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km when you reach your final destination three or more hours late — often several times the fare paid.

Cancellations notified inside fourteen days and involuntary denied boarding trigger the same amounts.

Which rules apply at Alicante

Spain is an EU member state, so EU261 governs every departure from Alicante whichever airline operates it. Arrivals from outside the EU/EEA are covered only when an EU/EEA or UK carrier operates the flight — though given Alicante's overwhelmingly European traffic, most arrivals are covered too. Note that the two directions of a UK route sit under different frameworks: Alicante to Manchester is an EU261 departure paid in euros, while Manchester to Alicante is a UK261 departure paid in the sterling bands.

What to do at the airport

Ask the airline for the reason in writing and keep the notification. Record when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination, since that timestamp decides whether the three-hour threshold was crossed. From two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul, the airline owes meals, refreshments, a means of communication and a hotel with transfers if you are kept overnight — even when the cause is outside its control. If nothing is provided, spend reasonably and keep the receipts.

Which Alicante delays are the airline's own doing?

Low-cost operations run on tight turnarounds, so a delay early in an aircraft's day frequently persists to its last rotation into Alicante. The summer peak brings congestion across European leisure airspace, and air traffic flow restrictions on busy weekends regularly arrive as late inbound aircraft. Mediterranean storms and occasional strong winds affect landing rates. Technical defects, crew running out of hours and consolidation of thinly booked flights sit within the airline's control and remain compensable. Where extraordinary circumstances are pleaded, the airline must prove them: its own crew striking is generally not extraordinary, while air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are.

Claiming for a flight from Alicante

The free eligibility check confirms the governing regulation and the band. We submit the claim, follow it up and challenge refusals that arrive without evidence; unresolved Spanish disputes can be escalated to AESA, the national enforcement body for EU261 in Spain. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

A Alicante-Elche Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers Alicante-Elche Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

My Ryanair fare to Alicante cost less than the compensation. Do I still get the full amount?

Yes. EU261 amounts are fixed by distance, not by ticket price, so a cheap fare can still produce a €250 or €400 payment if you arrived three or more hours late for a reason within the airline's control.

Who enforces air passenger rights in Spain?

AESA, the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea, is Spain's national enforcement body for EU261. A wrongly refused Alicante claim can be escalated there, and we manage that step for you.

My Alicante flight was cancelled 8 days before departure. Can I claim?

Yes, in principle. A cancellation notified less than 14 days ahead triggers compensation unless the airline proves an extraordinary cause or its re-routing offer fell within the regulation's timing limits. A refund or re-routing is owed on top.
