Ryanair flight delay and cancellation compensation

Ryanair is an EU airline, so EU261 covers its flights in both directions — here is what a delay, cancellation or denied boarding is worth.

Ryanair flight delay and cancellation claims pay €250 to €600 per passenger under EU261, or £220 to £520 under UK261. You qualify if you land three or more hours late, if Ryanair cancels with under 14 days' notice, or if it denies you boarding. No payment is due for extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather.

Which rules cover a Ryanair flight delay or cancellation?

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier licensed in Ireland, which makes it an EU carrier. That single fact decides how much of the world your rights reach.

  • Departing any EU/EEA airport — EU261 applies, whoever operates the flight.
  • Arriving into the EU/EEA from outside it — EU261 applies because Ryanair holds an EU operating licence.
  • Departing the UK on Ryanair — UK261, the retained British version of the same rules, applies. A flight from the EU into the UK is an EU departure, so EU261 covers it.

In practice that means almost the entire Ryanair network sits inside one regime or the other, including its Morocco, Israel, Jordan and Albania routes.

Compensation is triggered by three things: arriving at your final destination three or more hours late, a cancellation announced with less than 14 days' notice, or being denied boarding on an overbooked flight when you checked in on time.

What a delayed flight pays

Flight distanceExamplePer passenger
Up to 1,500 kmDublin → London€250
1,500–3,500 kmLondon → Athens€400
Over 3,500 kmLondon → New York€600

Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).

How much compensation you could receive

The amount is fixed by the distance of the route, not the price of the ticket. A EUR 19.99 seat and a fully flexible fare are worth exactly the same.

  • EUR 250 — flights of 1,500 km or less (Dublin–Manchester, Milan–Palermo)
  • EUR 400 — flights over 1,500 km within the EU, and any other flight between 1,500 km and 3,500 km (Dublin–Faro, London–Marrakesh)
  • EUR 600 — remaining flights over 3,500 km, which Ryanair's short-haul network rarely reaches

UK261 claims use the sterling bands of GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520. Everyone on the booking with a confirmed reservation is paid separately, so a family of four multiplies the figure by four. Infants on a lap, who hold no seat, do not qualify.

When Ryanair does not have to pay

There is no compensation where the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures — severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions, airport closures, security alerts, or a bird strike.

Two points are widely misunderstood:

  • The airline carries the burden of proof. A one-line message blaming "operational reasons" or "weather" is an assertion, not evidence. If Ryanair cannot substantiate it, the defence should fail.
  • A strike by the airline's own crew is generally not extraordinary, following EU case law that treats staff disputes as part of running an airline. Strikes by third parties — air-traffic controllers, airport handlers — usually are.

Routine technical faults found during ordinary maintenance are normally the airline's responsibility too, even though they are often described as unforeseeable.

How to claim from Ryanair

Keep the booking reference, your boarding pass or check-in confirmation, and any text or email announcing the delay. Ask staff, in writing, for the reason for the disruption.

Like most carriers, Ryanair wants claims submitted through its own process and may ask for identity or payment verification before releasing money. We handle the submission, the follow-up and any appeal, and we tell you plainly if we think a defence is likely to hold.

How long does Ryanair take to respond to a claim?

Response times vary a great deal between airlines and between individual claims, and they usually stretch after mass-disruption events when volumes spike. An automated acknowledgement is normal; a substantive answer takes longer. If a claim stalls or is refused without a proper explanation, it can be escalated to the national enforcement body — the Irish Aviation Authority for Irish departures (which took over passenger-rights enforcement from the former Commission for Aviation Regulation in 2023), the UK Civil Aviation Authority for UK ones — or pursued in court within the local time limit, which ranges from one year in Poland to six in the UK.

An EU261 reform approved in July 2026 will replace the limits in EU countries with one 9-month deadline. It is expected to apply from the second half of 2027; until then, the national limits stand.

Can AviationADR help if Ryanair says no?

Ryanair is a member of AviationADR, one of the two dispute-resolution schemes approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. If Ryanair rejects a UK261 claim, or eight weeks pass without a final answer, the case can go there free of charge — and a decision you accept is binding on the airline. For flights departing the EU, the national enforcement body of the departure country takes complaints instead; for Irish departures that is the Irish Aviation Authority.

What does our Ryanair claim service cost?

The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation, we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same amount whether you are owed EUR 250 or EUR 600 — and the airline's payment goes to you. No recovery, no fee.

How do you claim Ryanair flight delay compensation?

Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your Ryanair flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

For the law behind the figure, the flight delay compensation guide covers arrival delays and the cancellation compensation guide covers a flight that never operated. If Ryanair has already refused you, the case law summary sets out what the courts have said about the usual excuses.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does my cheap Ryanair fare reduce the compensation?

No. EU261 sets compensation by route distance alone, so a EUR 15 promotional fare and a EUR 300 last-minute booking attract the same EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. The compensation is not a refund of the ticket and is paid on top of any refund you are separately entitled to.

Ryanair told me it was a strike. Can I still claim?

It depends who was striking. Industrial action by Ryanair's own pilots or cabin crew is generally treated as part of normal airline operations and does not remove your right to compensation. A strike by air-traffic controllers or by airport ground staff employed by someone else is more likely to count as extraordinary, and Ryanair must prove it took all reasonable steps to limit the effect.

My Ryanair flight was moved to a different airport. What am I owed?

If you are re-routed to an alternative airport serving the same city or region, Ryanair must pay the cost of getting you to your original destination airport or an agreed nearby point. Compensation is then judged on how late you actually arrive at that final destination, so keep taxi, train or bus receipts as well as your arrival time.

How long after a Ryanair flight can I still claim?

The deadline is set by national law rather than by EU261 itself, so it varies widely — roughly two years in some member states, three in others, and up to six years for claims brought in Ireland or England and Wales. Older flights are often still claimable, so it is worth running a free check before assuming you are out of time.
