Compensation on the Dublin to London route
Dublin to London is flown many times a day into every major London airport and is one of the densest international city pairs anywhere in Europe. The distance is approximately 460 km, well inside the shortest compensation band. The frequency of the route shapes the kind of disruption passengers see: aircraft operate several rotations a day, so a delay early in the morning tends to compound as the day goes on, and a cancellation is often followed by a rebooking onto a service a few hours later. Neither of those things removes your entitlement if you still arrived three or more hours behind schedule.
Check what you're owed
How much you could be owed
Under 1,500 km, giving €250 per passenger under EU261, or £220 where UK261 governs the claim. Article 7(2), which can halve the payment on three-to-four-hour delays, applies only to flights over 3,500 km and so has no bearing here. As always the test is arrival, not departure: a flight that pushes back two hours late but lands within three hours of schedule produces no compensation, while a shorter departure delay followed by holding or a diversion can push you over the line. Note the time the aircraft doors opened at your destination.
Which regulation applies
Ireland is an EU member state, so EU261 covers the Dublin departure whichever airline operates it. Because the flight arrives in the UK, UK261 can also be engaged where the operating carrier is a UK or EU/EEA airline, which on this route is effectively always the case. You bring one claim under whichever framework applies rather than two, and the main practical difference is the currency and the exact figure. In the reverse direction the departure is from the UK, so UK261 governs it regardless of the airline — the two directions of a return booking are assessed independently.
Airlines flying this route
The corridor is typically served by Aer Lingus, Ryanair and British Airways, with the specific mix depending on which London airport you fly into. All are UK or EU carriers, so coverage is rarely disputed on this route in either direction; disputes here are almost always about the cause of the delay rather than whether the regulation applies. Codeshares and franchise operations do occur, so confirm the operating airline shown on your boarding pass.
How to claim
The eligibility check is free and takes only the flight number and date. We confirm the applicable regulation, the band, and whether an onward connection on the same booking pushes the claim higher. Common causes on this route include late inbound aircraft, crew running out of duty hours, tight turnarounds and airspace flow restrictions over the Irish Sea and southern England — most of which are within the airline's control and leave a claim standing. Severe weather, air traffic control restrictions and security incidents can be extraordinary circumstances that remove compensation, but only where the airline proves them. We charge a single fixed €39 success fee, payable only once your compensation has been recovered.
What a delayed flight pays
| Flight distance | Example | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dublin → London | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | London → Athens | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | London → New York | €600 |
Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).
