Vienna International Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?
Vienna International Airport is the hub of Austrian Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, and a busy transfer point between Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and long-haul destinations; Ryanair and Wizz Air also maintain a significant presence. EU261 sets fixed compensation when you reach your final destination three or more hours late: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km.
Cancellations announced with less than fourteen days' notice and involuntary denied boarding carry the same amounts.

Which rules apply at Vienna
Austria is an EU member state, so EU261 applies to every departure from Vienna, whichever airline operates it. Flights arriving into Vienna are covered only when the operating carrier is an EU or EEA airline — the standard catch on long-haul returns flown by non-European carriers. On a single-booking itinerary connecting through Vienna, both the three-hour test and the distance band are measured to the final destination, which frequently lifts a claim into a higher band than the disrupted leg alone would suggest.
What to do at the airport
Ask the airline to state its reason in writing and keep the message. Note when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination, because that is the timestamp the three-hour threshold is judged against. Duty of care begins at two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul: meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers overnight, owed whatever the cause. Keep receipts for anything you buy when nothing is offered.
What disrupts flights at Vienna?
Vienna's hub structure means tightly linked aircraft rotations, so a late inbound aircraft early in the day tends to echo through the schedule. Winter snow and de-icing, summer thunderstorms and air traffic flow restrictions across Central European airspace all appear regularly. Technical faults, crew shortages and commercial consolidation remain within the airline's control and compensable. When extraordinary circumstances are invoked, the airline carries the burden of proof — its own staff striking is generally not extraordinary, while air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are.
Claiming for a flight from Vienna
Start with the free eligibility check to confirm the regulation and the band. We submit the claim and press for evidence where a refusal arrives unsupported; Austrian passengers can also escalate unresolved disputes to the apf, the Agentur für Passagier- und Fahrgastrechte, Austria's passenger rights agency — a route we handle within the claim. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

A Vienna International Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.
For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers Vienna International Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.
