Stockholm Arlanda flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Stockholm Arlanda is Sweden's largest airport and a key base for SAS, alongside substantial operations from Norwegian, Ryanair and a range of European and long-haul carriers. Under EU261, arriving at your final destination three or more hours late can entitle you to €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km.

A cancellation announced with less than fourteen days' notice and involuntary denied boarding attract the same amounts, per passenger and regardless of what the ticket cost.

Which rules apply at Stockholm Arlanda

Sweden is an EU member state, so EU261 governs every departure from Arlanda whichever airline operates it. Arrivals are covered only when the operating carrier is an EU or EEA airline, so SAS and Norwegian returns from outside Europe are inside the regulation while the same routes on non-European carriers are not. Sweden's elongated geography means some domestic sectors approach the 1,500 km line, but most domestic and Nordic claims sit in the €250 band, with continental European routes often reaching €400.

What to do at the airport

Get the reason in writing and keep it with your boarding passes. Note when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination — that timestamp decides the three-hour question. From two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul, the airline owes meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers overnight, even when the cause is outside its control. Keep receipts for anything you have to buy.

Can snow and de-icing at Arlanda defeat your claim?

Winter operations dominate: snow, ice and de-icing queues at Arlanda slow departures for months of the year, and cold snaps bring technical and ground handling knock-ons. Tight SAS rotations spread delays through the day, and European air traffic flow restrictions reach Stockholm as late inbound aircraft. Weather can be extraordinary, but the airline carries the burden of proving both the event and that it took all reasonable measures. Strikes by the airline's own staff are generally not extraordinary; air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are.

How do you claim for a Stockholm flight, and what does the ARN do?

Start with the free eligibility check to confirm the regulation and the band. We submit the claim, follow it up and challenge unevidenced refusals; unresolved Swedish disputes can be taken to the ARN, the National Board for Consumer Disputes, whose recommendations most airlines follow. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

How to claim Stockholm Arlanda compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your flight from Stockholm Arlanda and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

A Stockholm Arlanda compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers Stockholm Arlanda cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where can a refused Swedish claim be escalated?

The ARN — Allmänna reklamationsnämnden, the National Board for Consumer Disputes — reviews air passenger complaints in Sweden, and most airlines comply with its recommendations. We handle the escalation for you.

Is a domestic flight within Sweden covered by EU261?

Yes. EU261 applies to domestic flights within a member state, so a delayed Arlanda departure to another Swedish city can carry a €250 claim if you arrived three or more hours late.

De-icing queues delayed my flight. Can the airline refuse to pay?

Only if it proves extraordinary circumstances. Routine winter de-icing at a Nordic airport is part of normal operations, so refusals on that basis alone are often successfully challenged.
