Does EU261 cover a flight from Istanbul?
Only on the right airline.
- Flying from Europe to Istanbul — EU261 applies, whoever operates it, because the flight left an EU airport.
- Flying to Europe on an EU or EEA airline — EU261 applies, because an EU carrier is bringing you into the EU.
- Flying to Europe on Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet or SunExpress — EU261 does not apply.
A UK departure or arrival follows the same shape under UK261, which reaches a flight into the UK on a UK or EU airline.
So one return trip can be covered in one direction and not the other, on the same booking.
What is a covered Istanbul flight worth?
The sums are fixed by distance, never by the fare: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and €600 beyond.
Most routes between Istanbul and northern Europe run about 3,000 km, which puts them in the middle band.
