Your rights on a Luxair flight
Luxair is Luxembourg's national airline, based at Luxembourg Findel, flying scheduled European routes alongside its LuxairTours leisure programme to the Mediterranean and North Africa. It holds a Luxembourg operating licence, so it is an EU carrier and EU261 reaches both directions:
- Departures from any EU/EEA airport, whoever operates the flight
- Arrivals into the EU/EEA from outside it, because the operating carrier is an EU airline
- Departures from the UK, and arrivals into the UK on Luxair fall under UK261
Because Luxembourg is a compact market feeding connections onward through larger hubs, a modest delay on a Luxair flight can cost an onward connection; where all sectors are on a single booking, compensation is measured by how late you reach the final destination. Compensation is triggered by a three-hour-plus arrival delay, a cancellation with under 14 days' notice, or denied boarding after checking in on time.
What a delayed flight pays
| Flight distance | Example | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dublin → London | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | London → Athens | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | London → New York | €600 |
Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).
How much you could receive
- EUR 250 — routes of 1,500 km or less, which covers most of Luxair's European scheduled network
- EUR 400 — intra-EU routes over 1,500 km and other routes of 1,500 to 3,500 km, including the LuxairTours flying to the Canaries, Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean
- EUR 600 — the rare route beyond 3,500 km
UK261 claims use GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520. The amount is fixed by distance, not by the fare, and each passenger on the booking claims separately. Article 7(2) permits the top band to be halved where a long-haul re-routing lands under four hours late.
When Luxair doesn't have to pay
There is no compensation where Luxair proves extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures — severe weather, ATC flow restrictions, airport closures, security incidents or a bird strike.
The burden of proof is the airline's, not yours: a bare reference to "operational reasons" is not evidence. A strike by Luxair's own crew is generally not extraordinary, following EU case law, whereas an ATC strike or a walkout by third-party airport staff usually is. Routine technical faults found during ordinary maintenance normally remain the airline's responsibility.
How to claim from Luxair
Keep the booking reference, boarding passes for every sector, the notification message, and receipts for any meals or a hotel you paid for yourself, and note the real arrival time at your final destination. Luxair wants claims through its own process and may ask for verification first.
If a claim is refused without a proper explanation, it can be escalated to Luxembourg's enforcement body for air passenger rights for departures from Findel, to the enforcement body of the departure state elsewhere in the EU, or to court within the applicable limitation period.
What it costs
The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600 — and the airline's payment goes to you. No win, no fee.

What you need to claim
- Your flight number and date
- The airports you flew between
- Roughly how late you arrived
- Your booking reference, if you still have it
No boarding pass? We can usually work from the flight number and date alone.
