Japan Airlines flight delay and cancellation compensation

Japan Airlines is a Japanese carrier, so EU261 and UK261 cover only its flights leaving an EU/EEA or UK airport — not arrivals from Tokyo.

Your rights on a Japan Airlines flight

Japan Airlines (JL) is Japan's flag carrier and a oneworld member, flying from Tokyo to London Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt and Helsinki. It is not an EU or UK carrier, so your rights depend on the airport you leave from, not on the airline.

Because Japan Airlines holds no EU or UK operating licence, coverage lands on the departure side only:

  • Departing any EU/EEA airport on Japan Airlines — EU261 applies.
  • Departing the UK on Japan Airlines — UK261, the retained British version, applies.
  • Arriving into the EU/EEA or the UK from Tokyonot covered, because Japan Airlines is not a Community carrier and the inbound limb requires an EU or UK airline.

A Helsinki or Heathrow departure to Tokyo is protected; the same aircraft flying Tokyo to London is not. Every JAL route out of Europe is long-haul, which puts eligible claims in the top band.

Compensation is triggered by a delay of three hours or more at your final destination, a cancellation with under 14 days' notice, or involuntary denied boarding.

What a delayed flight pays

Flight distanceExamplePer passenger
Up to 1,500 kmDublin → London€250
1,500–3,500 kmLondon → Athens€400
Over 3,500 kmLondon → New York€600

Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).

How much you could receive

The sum is fixed by route distance, not by the fare, the cabin or your frequent-flyer status, and each passenger with a confirmed seat claims separately.

  • EUR 250 — flights of 1,500 km or less
  • EUR 400 — flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km
  • EUR 600 — flights over 3,500 km, which covers Japan Airlines' departures from Europe to Tokyo

UK261 claims use the sterling bands of GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520.

When Japan Airlines doesn't have to pay

There is no compensation where the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures — severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions, airport closures, security alerts or a bird strike.

Two points are widely misunderstood:

  • The airline carries the burden of proof. A one-line message citing "operational reasons" is an assertion, not evidence.
  • A strike by Japan Airlines' own crew is generally not extraordinary, while strikes by third parties — air-traffic controllers, airport handlers — usually are.

Routine technical faults found during ordinary maintenance normally remain the airline's responsibility.

How to claim from Japan Airlines

Keep the booking reference, your boarding pass, and any message announcing the delay or cancellation. Ask, in writing, for the reason. For a missed connection in Tokyo, note the time you actually reached your final destination.

We handle the submission, the follow-up and any appeal from start to finish.

What it costs

The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600 — and the airline's payment goes to you. No win, no fee.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my Japan Airlines flight from Tokyo to London covered?

No. Japan Airlines is a Japanese carrier, not an EU or UK airline, so a flight arriving into Europe from Tokyo falls outside both EU261 and UK261. Only the outbound leg departing an EU/EEA or UK airport — Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt or Helsinki to Tokyo — is protected.

My JAL codeshare was operated by British Airways. Which rules apply?

The rules follow the operating carrier. If British Airways, a UK airline, actually flew the sector, the wider coverage for UK carriers applies, including arrivals into the UK. If Japan Airlines operated the aircraft, only departures from an EU/EEA or UK airport are covered, whatever flight number is on your ticket.

Does flying business class change the Japan Airlines compensation?

No. The compensation is fixed by route distance, not by cabin or ticket price, so a business passenger and an economy passenger on the same delayed departure from Europe are owed the same amount. It is paid on top of any refund you are separately entitled to.
