Hamburg Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?
Hamburg Airport serves northern Germany with a dense European network built around Eurowings, easyJet and Ryanair, plus Lufthansa Group feeders into the Frankfurt and Munich hubs. EU261 sets fixed compensation when you reach your final destination three or more hours late: €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km.
A cancellation announced with less than fourteen days' notice and involuntary denied boarding carry the same figures, provided the underlying cause sat within the airline's control.

Which rules apply at Hamburg
Germany is an EU member state, so EU261 covers every departure from Hamburg whatever airline operates it. Arrivals from outside the EU/EEA are covered only when an EU/EEA or UK carrier is flying. Because much of Hamburg's traffic is a short feeder onto a long-haul connection elsewhere, remember that on a single booking both the three-hour test and the distance band are measured against the final destination — a delayed hop to Frankfurt can still produce a €600 claim when the journey ends more than 3,500 km away.
What to do at the airport
Ask the airline for its reason in writing and keep the notification. Note when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination, the timestamp the three-hour threshold is judged against. Duty of care begins at two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul: meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers if you are kept overnight, whatever the cause of the disruption. Keep receipts for reasonable spending if nothing is offered.
What causes delays at Hamburg, and which ones pay?
Hamburg's North Sea exposure brings wind, low cloud and winter de-icing queues that reduce capacity, and the airport's night restrictions can turn a late-evening delay into an overnight cancellation. Tight low-cost rotations spread a morning setback through the day, and European air traffic flow restrictions arrive as late inbound aircraft. Technical faults, crew shortages and commercial cancellations remain within the airline's control and compensable. Where extraordinary circumstances are pleaded, the airline carries the burden of proof: its own crew striking is generally not extraordinary, while air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are.
Claiming for a flight from Hamburg
The free eligibility check confirms whether EU261 applies and which band fits your route. We submit and pursue the claim and challenge unevidenced refusals; unresolved German disputes can be escalated to the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA), the national enforcement body, or resolved through the söp arbitration board free of charge. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

A Hamburg Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.
For a late arrival, read the flight delay compensation guide. For a flight that never flew, read the cancellation compensation guide. It covers Hamburg Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The case law summary sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.
