KLM flight delay and cancellation claims pay €250 to €600 per passenger under EU261, or £220 to £520 under UK261. You qualify if you land three or more hours late at your final destination, if KLM cancels with under 14 days' notice, or if it denies you boarding. A missed Schiphol connection on one booking can count too.
Which law covers a KLM flight delay?
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the Netherlands' flag carrier, based at Amsterdam Schiphol and part of the Air France-KLM group. It holds a Dutch operating licence, which makes it an EU carrier and gives EU261 its widest reach:
- Departures from any EU/EEA airport are covered whoever operates them
- Arrivals into the EU/EEA from a non-EU country are covered because KLM is an EU airline — a Nairobi or Toronto flight into Schiphol qualifies
- UK flights fall under UK261, which mirrors EU261 for departures from the UK and for arrivals into the UK on an EU or UK carrier
KLM Cityhopper operates much of the European short-haul network under KLM flight numbers, and it is likewise a Dutch carrier. Where a codeshare is flown by a partner outside the group, the claim follows the operating carrier, not the code on the ticket.
What a delayed flight pays
| Flight distance | Example | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dublin → London | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | London → Athens | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | London → New York | €600 |
Amounts are per passenger, not per booking. A delay of 3–4 hours over 3,500 km may be reduced by half under Article 7(2).
Can you claim for a missed KLM connection at Schiphol?
Schiphol is built around tight connecting waves, so much KLM disruption is not an outright cancellation but a missed onward flight. The rule that matters here is that compensation is measured by how late you arrive at the final destination on your booking — not by the length of the first delay.
A forty-minute hold on a Manchester–Amsterdam feeder that costs you a Jakarta connection and puts you on the next day's service is, on a single reservation, potentially a full long-haul claim. Two separately booked tickets are treated as two journeys, which is a costly mistake when self-connecting.
How much you could receive
- EUR 250 — routes of 1,500 km or less
- EUR 400 — intra-EU routes over 1,500 km, plus other routes of 1,500 to 3,500 km
- EUR 600 — routes over 3,500 km, covering KLM's intercontinental network
Compensation is triggered by a three-hour-plus arrival delay, a cancellation notified with under 14 days' notice, or denied boarding on an oversold flight. Article 7(2) permits a 50 per cent reduction on long-haul routes where the re-routed arrival is less than four hours late. UK261 claims pay GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520.
Cabin and fare make no difference, and each passenger on the booking is entitled separately.
When can KLM refuse to pay?
The defence is extraordinary circumstances: causes genuinely outside the airline's control that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures. Severe weather, European ATC flow restrictions, Schiphol runway and capacity limitations imposed by the authorities, security incidents and bird strikes are the standard examples.
Points worth holding on to:
- The airline must prove it, both the cause and the reasonable measures it took. An unexplained "operational reasons" line does not discharge that.
- Own-staff strikes are generally not extraordinary; third-party strikes such as ATC or independent ground-handling action usually are.
- Technical faults found during routine maintenance normally remain the airline's risk.
Even where compensation is excluded, the right to care — food, communications, and a hotel with transfers overnight — is not.
How do you claim from KLM, and what should you expect?
Keep the booking reference, boarding passes for every leg, the notification message, and receipts for anything you paid for yourself. Note the exact time you reached your final destination.
Response times vary between claims and lengthen after major disruption. If a claim is refused without proper substantiation, it can be escalated to the Dutch enforcement body (ILT), taken to a national dispute scheme, or pursued in court — and Dutch limitation periods for these claims are among the shorter ones in Europe, so it pays not to leave it.
We check eligibility free of charge and charge a fixed EUR 39 only when compensation is recovered.
How to claim KLM compensation
Start with the flight itself. Our free flight check reads the recorded times for your KLM flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.
For the law behind the figure, the flight delay compensation guide covers arrival delays and the cancellation compensation guide covers a flight that never operated. If KLM has already refused you, the case law summary sets out what the courts have said about the usual excuses.

What you need to claim
- Your flight number and date
- The airports you flew between
- Roughly how late you arrived
- Your booking reference, if you still have it
No boarding pass? We can usually work from the flight number and date alone.
