Air traffic controllers at Brussels South Charleroi are striking every night until 10 October, and 66 flights went on 17 and 18 September alone. Here is why the fixed payment normally does not apply, and what the airline still owes you.

Charleroi airport strike compensation is unlikely for flights that the Skeyes air traffic control walkout has cancelled, because the controllers work for Skeyes, not your airline. That makes the disruption an extraordinary circumstance. The airline still owes you a refund or a new flight, plus meals and a hotel while you wait. Our monitoring has not yet recorded flights for this event.

The Brussels South Charleroi airport strike is hitting Belgium's second-largest airport. The sources reviewed do not report when the action began, so we do not state a start date here. It runs overnight rather than all day, and it is set to continue for weeks. Here is how it has unfolded, and what each stage means for a claim.

## Nightly from 10pm to 8am: the Skeyes walkout runs to 10 October

Controllers at Charleroi have announced strikes every night between 10pm and 8am until Saturday 10 October, and the UK Foreign Office has told travellers using the airport to follow local news and check with their airline or travel operator about delays and closures, [The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/brussels-charleroi-airport-ryanair-flight-cancellations-strikes-b3052326.html) reported. The Foreign Office also flagged a large demonstration in central Brussels on Friday 9 October, though whether it will affect public transport is unclear.

The airport has named the cause. The action is at Skeyes, the Belgian air traffic control provider, and stems from an ongoing social dispute in Charleroi. "As an airport, we have no influence over its progress or outcome," Charleroi said, adding that it shares its passengers' frustration. The sources do not say whether Skeyes will resolve the dispute before, on or after 10 October, and Skeyes has not commented on the substance of the dispute in the material reviewed.

## 66 cancellations on 17 and 18 September, and 11 Ryanair arrivals in a row

On Thursday 17 September, the airport said it had cancelled 66 flights due to arrive or leave that day and the next. Flightradar24 data showed 11 consecutive Ryanair arrivals dropped on the Thursday night, one of them from Manchester, and a Ryanair departure to Manchester went on the Friday, according to [newswav](https://newswav.com/article/flights-cancelled-at-major-european-airport-due-to-strikes-as-uk-foreign-of-A2609_1FhADO). Wizz Air and Ryanair cancellations continued through Friday.

Ryanair, Wizz Air, Volotea, Pegasus Airlines and Air Corsica all fly from Charleroi, so the Skeyes strike Ryanair flights are only part of the picture. Our own monitoring has not yet logged flights for this event, so those counts come from the airport and from Flightradar24, not from us. The sources do not give a total number of passengers affected across the whole strike period.

## Does Charleroi airport strike compensation apply here?

Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 ("EU261") and its British version, UK261, a cancellation or an arrival more than three hours late usually carries a fixed cash payment. That payment falls away when the cause lies outside the airline's control. Regulators treat a walkout by a national air traffic control provider the same way, as explained in [when an air traffic control walkout counts as outside the airline's control](/airline-strike-compensation).

A Ryanair Charleroi strike compensation claim therefore turns on who is striking, not on whose name is on the ticket. These are the amounts at stake if the cause were the airline's own doing:

Most Charleroi routes to and from the UK sit in the first row, but a Skeyes walkout normally rules those sums out.

Two further points apply. A cancellation announced 14 or more days before departure never carries the fixed payment, whatever caused it. And nobody has yet confirmed whether each airline will formally raise the extraordinary-circumstances defence for every flight it cancels during this strike.

## Does the strike affect every Charleroi flight?

Being booked inside the strike window does not mean the airline cancelled your flight. Two Ryanair services from the UK, from Manchester and Newcastle, landed without delay even though the airport cancelled other flights that night. Flights to and from Brussels Airport, the city's main hub, appeared unaffected throughout.

That cuts both ways for a claim. If the disruption to your flight happened at a time or an airport the strike does not explain, the airline may be responsible, for example because of a crew-planning or IT problem. ## The Charleroi cancelled flights refund, meals and hotel Skeyes cannot cancel

An extraordinary circumstance removes the cash, not the rest of your rights. If the airline cancels your flight, it must offer you a straight choice: a full refund of the unused parts of your ticket, or rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity. ## Before a 10pm to 8am Charleroi departure this side of 10 October

## If an October cancellation turns out to be the airline's own doing

Assess each cancellation on its own cause, so a flight lost in early October may not automatically belong to this strike.
