# Istanbul flight delay and cancellation compensation

Istanbul is outside the EU, so which airline flies you decides whether EU261 reaches your departure. A flight from Europe to Istanbul is always covered.

## Istanbul flight delay and cancellation: your rights

Istanbul Airport is one of the world's largest hubs, and a great deal of European traffic connects through it rather than ending there.

Turkey is not in the EU, and that decides everything about coverage here. The direction you fly, and the airline that flies you, settle whether the regulation reaches your flight at all.

## Does EU261 cover a flight from Istanbul?

Only on the right airline.

- **Flying from Europe to Istanbul** — EU261 applies, whoever operates it, because the flight left an EU airport.
- **Flying to Europe on an EU or EEA airline** — EU261 applies, because an EU carrier is bringing you into the EU.
- **Flying to Europe on Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet or SunExpress** — EU261 does **not** apply.

A UK departure or arrival follows the same shape under UK261, with a UK airline in place of an EU one.

So one return trip can be covered in one direction and not the other, on the same booking.

## How much a covered flight is worth

The sums are fixed by distance, never by the fare: **€250** up to 1,500 km, **€400** between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and **€600** beyond.

Most routes between Istanbul and northern Europe run about 3,000 km, which puts them in the middle band.

A cancellation inside fourteen days pays the same, and so does denied boarding.

## What to do on the leg EU261 cannot reach

It is still worth writing. The Montreal Convention covers costs a delay actually caused you, and the airline's own conditions of carriage may promise meals and a hotel.

Keep the boarding pass, every receipt and any message the airline sent. Ask for the reason in writing before you leave the airport.

## How to claim Istanbul flight delay compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded departure and arrival times for your flight from Istanbul and tells you which band it falls in.

Your Istanbul compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation). For a flight that never flew, read the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation). It covers Istanbul cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to London covered?

Not by UK261 or EU261. The flight leaves a non-EU airport and Turkish Airlines is neither a UK nor an EU carrier. British Airways flying the same route is covered.

### My easyJet flight from Istanbul was delayed six hours. Can I claim?

Yes. easyJet is an EU carrier bringing you into Europe, so EU261 applies. The sum is €250 to €600 by distance, once you land three or more hours late.

### The airline says the delay was outside its control. What can I ask for?

Ask for the reason in writing. The airline must show both that the cause was extraordinary and that no reasonable step would have avoided it. A technical fault found in routine maintenance is neither.
