# Frankfurt Airport flight delay and cancellation compensation

Delayed or cancelled at Frankfurt Airport? EU261 can pay €250 to €600 per passenger. Free eligibility check and one fixed €39 fee only if we recover.

## Frankfurt Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Frankfurt Airport serves the city and the wider Rhine-Main region and is one of Europe's principal long-haul hubs, which is why disruption here so often affects onward journeys rather than just a single sector. EU261 attaches a fixed payment to any flight that delivers you to your final destination three or more hours late: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and €600 over 3,500 km.

Short-notice cancellations — anything announced within fourteen days of departure — and involuntary denied boarding carry the same figures. On a long-haul delay of between three and four hours, Article 7(2) permits the airline to reduce €600 to €300 where re-routing is offered within the prescribed limits.

## Which rules apply at Frankfurt

Germany is an EU member state, so EU261 covers all departures from Frankfurt without regard to the airline's home country. A Gulf, Asian or North American carrier leaving Frankfurt is bound by the regulation just as Lufthansa is. Arrivals into Frankfurt are only covered when the operating airline is an EU or EEA carrier, which is the point that trips people up on return legs from outside Europe. If your itinerary connects through Frankfurt on a single booking, the destination used for the distance band is the end of the journey, so a short domestic feeder feeding a long-haul flight can still sit in the €600 band.

## What to do at the airport

Ask the airline for a written reason and hold on to it — the explanation given at the desk is often the one you later need to challenge. Record the actual arrival time at your final destination, measured from when the doors opened, since a few minutes either side of three hours decides the whole claim. Duty of care obligations start at two hours for short routes, three for medium and four for long-haul, and include meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers for an overnight wait. These apply even where the cause is genuinely outside the airline's control, so keep receipts if you have to arrange things yourself.

## What causes delays and cancellations at Frankfurt?

Frankfurt operates a dense, highly connected schedule, so aircraft and crew rotations are tight and an early delay can persist all day. Winter weather brings de-icing queues and reduced capacity in low visibility; summer brings thunderstorms and airspace flow restrictions across central Europe. Congestion elsewhere on the network frequently arrives in Frankfurt as a late inbound aircraft. Weather, air traffic control restrictions and security incidents can qualify as extraordinary circumstances and remove compensation — but the airline carries the burden of proving them. Technical faults, crew availability and airline scheduling choices do not qualify.

## Claiming for a flight from Frankfurt

Begin with the free eligibility check. We confirm whether EU261 governs the flight, work out the correct band from the distance to your final destination, and assemble the claim. Where the airline invokes extraordinary circumstances, we ask for the evidence it is legally required to hold rather than taking the refusal at face value. There is no upfront cost, no hourly charge and no deduction if the claim does not succeed: we take a single fixed €39 success fee once compensation has actually been recovered for you.

## How to claim Frankfurt Airport compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded times for your flight from Frankfurt Airport and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

A Frankfurt Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation). For a flight that never flew, read the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation). It covers Frankfurt Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a Lufthansa strike count as extraordinary circumstances?

Industrial action by an airline's own staff is generally not treated as extraordinary, so compensation usually remains payable. Wider air traffic control or airport-wide strikes are treated differently. The airline must prove any defence it raises.

### My feeder flight to Frankfurt was late and I missed a long-haul connection.

On a single booking the claim is based on arrival at your final destination. A short first leg can therefore produce a €600 claim if the long-haul destination is more than 3,500 km away.

### I was rebooked onto another airline. Does that affect my claim?

No. Re-routing is a separate obligation from compensation. What matters is how late you reached your destination and whether the original cause was within the airline's control.

### How much do you charge?

A fixed €39 success fee, and only after your compensation has been paid. The eligibility check is free and you owe nothing if the claim is unsuccessful.
