# Brussels Airport flight delay and cancellation compensation

Delayed or cancelled at Brussels Airport? EU261 can pay €250 to €600 per passenger. Free eligibility check and one fixed €39 fee only when we recover.

## Brussels Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Brussels Airport at Zaventem is the hub of Brussels Airlines, whose Lufthansa Group network is particularly strong into West and Central Africa, alongside dense European schedules from carriers including TUI fly and Ryanair. EU261 attaches fixed compensation when you arrive at your final destination three or more hours late: €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 beyond 3,500 km.

A cancellation announced with less than fourteen days' notice and involuntary denied boarding carry the same amounts.

## Which rules apply at Brussels

Belgium is an EU member state, so EU261 governs every departure from Brussels Airport whatever airline operates it. Arrivals are covered only when an EU or EEA carrier is flying, so a Brussels Airlines return from Africa sits inside the regulation while the same journey on a non-European airline does not. On single-booking itineraries connecting through Brussels, eligibility and the band are assessed against the final destination — relevant for the many journeys that continue beyond Zaventem on the Lufthansa Group network.

## What to do at the airport

Ask for the reason in writing and keep the notification. Record when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination, since that timestamp determines whether you crossed three hours. Duty of care starts at two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul: meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers for an overnight wait, owed even when the cause is outside the airline's control. Keep receipts if you have to arrange things yourself.

## What disrupts Brussels flights, and do strikes count?

Brussels sits in some of Europe's busiest airspace, so air traffic flow restrictions and knock-on congestion arrive quickly, and Belgian national strike days periodically affect airport ground services. Winter fog and de-icing, plus tight hub rotations, do the rest. The distinction between strike types matters: industrial action by the airline's own staff is generally not extraordinary, so compensation stands, while air traffic control or airport-staff strikes usually are extraordinary. Either way the airline carries the burden of proof, and technical faults and crew shortages remain compensable.

## Claiming for a flight from Brussels

Run the free eligibility check to confirm the regulation and the band. We prepare and chase the claim and challenge refusals that arrive without evidence; unresolved Belgian disputes can be escalated to the FPS Mobility and Transport, Belgium's national enforcement body for EU261. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

## How to claim Brussels Airport compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded times for your flight from Brussels Airport and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

A Brussels Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation). For a flight that never flew, read the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation). It covers Brussels Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Who enforces air passenger rights in Belgium?

The FPS Mobility and Transport — the Belgian federal public service for transport — is the national enforcement body for EU261. We escalate wrongly refused Brussels claims there as part of the service.

### An airport staff strike disrupted my Brussels flight. Can I claim compensation?

Strikes by airport staff or air traffic controllers are usually treated as extraordinary circumstances, which removes compensation, though the airline must still prove its case. Meals, refreshments and a hotel remain owed regardless.

### Is my Brussels Airlines flight to Africa in the €600 band?

Most of it, yes. Any route over 3,500 km from Brussels falls in the €600 band, which covers the large majority of sub-Saharan destinations on the network.
