# Athens International Airport flight delay and cancellation compensation

Delayed or cancelled at Athens International Airport? EU261 can pay €250 to €600 per passenger. Free eligibility check, fixed €39 fee only if we win.

## Athens International Airport flight delay or cancellation: what are your rights?

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is Greece's main gateway and the hub of Aegean Airlines, combining a dense domestic island network with European routes and a growing long-haul schedule; Sky Express, Ryanair and many seasonal carriers add to a traffic pattern that peaks sharply in summer.

EU261 sets fixed compensation when you reach your final destination three or more hours late: €250 for routes up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 above 3,500 km.

Short-notice cancellations — inside fourteen days — and involuntary denied boarding carry the same amounts.

## Which rules apply at Athens

Greece is an EU member state, so EU261 applies to every departure from Athens whichever airline operates it, seasonal charters included. Arrivals into Athens are covered only when the operating carrier is an EU or EEA airline, the usual limitation on long-haul returns flown by non-European carriers. Domestic flights to the islands are covered too: EU261 applies within a member state, and those distances sit in the €250 band with the same three-hour arrival test.

## What to do at the airport

Ask the airline to state the cause in writing and keep it. Record when the aircraft doors opened at your final destination — the reference for the three-hour threshold. From two hours on short routes, three on medium and four on long-haul, you are owed meals, refreshments, communication and a hotel with transfers if kept overnight, whatever the cause. Keep receipts for reasonable spending when nothing is offered.

## Why are Athens flights delayed in summer, and do strikes count?

The summer peak is where most Athens disruption happens: tight aircraft rotations across the island network, congestion in Greek and wider European airspace, and strong seasonal winds affecting island sectors all feed delays back into the hub. Greek air traffic control industrial action features periodically — strikes by controllers or airport staff are usually extraordinary circumstances, while a strike by the airline's own crew generally is not. Whatever defence is raised, the airline carries the burden of proof. Technical faults and crew shortages remain compensable.

## Claiming for a flight from Athens

Start with the free eligibility check: we confirm the regulation, the band and the likely strength of any airline defence. We submit and chase the claim and challenge unevidenced refusals; unresolved Greek disputes can be escalated to the HCAA, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, Greece's national enforcement body. The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600. No win, no fee.

## How to claim Athens International Airport compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded times for your flight from Athens International Airport and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

A Athens International Airport compensation claim turns on two things: the arrival time, and the reason the airline gives.

For a late arrival, read the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation). For a flight that never flew, read the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation). It covers Athens International Airport cancellation compensation too. Has the airline said no? The [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts make of the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is my domestic Aegean flight from Athens to an island covered?

Yes. EU261 applies to domestic flights within an EU member state, so a delayed island hop can carry a €250 claim if you arrived three or more hours late for a reason within the airline's control.

### Who enforces EU261 in Greece?

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) is the national enforcement body. If an airline wrongly refuses a claim for an Athens flight, we escalate the dispute there on your behalf.

### A Greek air traffic control strike delayed my flight. Am I owed compensation?

Usually not — strikes by air traffic controllers are normally extraordinary circumstances, though the airline must still prove the strike caused your delay. You remain entitled to meals, refreshments and a hotel if needed.
