# Gulf Air flight delay and cancellation compensation

Gulf Air is Bahrain's national carrier, so EU261 and UK261 cover its departures from Europe — typically EUR 600 or GBP 520 — but not its arrivals.

## When is a Gulf Air flight delay covered by EU261 or UK261?

**Gulf Air flight delay** compensation **pays** €600 per passenger on Paris or Frankfurt departures to Bahrain, and £520 from London Heathrow. Flights from Bahrain into Europe fall outside both regimes. You qualify after arriving three or more hours late, a cancellation with less than 14 days' notice, or involuntary denied boarding on an oversold flight.

Gulf Air is the national carrier of Bahrain, connecting its Manama hub with London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt among other European cities. Because it holds no EU or UK operating licence, your European rights depend entirely on the direction of travel.

- **Departing an EU/EEA airport** — EU261 applies, so a Paris or Frankfurt departure to Bahrain is covered.
- **Departing a UK airport** — UK261 applies to a Heathrow departure.
- **Arriving into Europe from Bahrain** — **not covered**. A Bahrain to London flight sits outside both regimes, because the inbound rules only reach non-EU carriers when the flight leaves from Europe in the first place.

The trigger events are the same three throughout: arrival at your final destination three or more hours late, a cancellation notified less than 14 days before departure, or involuntary denied boarding on an oversold flight.

## How much does Gulf Air pay on London, Paris and Frankfurt routes?

Compensation is banded by great-circle distance, never by the fare paid:

- **EUR 250** — routes of 1,500 km or less
- **EUR 400** — routes between 1,500 and 3,500 km
- **EUR 600** — routes over 3,500 km

Bahrain lies well over 3,500 km from western Europe, so Gulf Air's London, Paris and Frankfurt routes all sit in the top band: **EUR 600** for an EU departure and **GBP 520** for a Heathrow one under the sterling scale of GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520. Where a re-routing lands you less than four hours late on a long route, the airline may halve the figure under Article 7(2).

## When Gulf Air doesn't have to pay

Extraordinary circumstances — severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions, airport closures, security incidents — remove the right to compensation, but only if they genuinely could not have been avoided with all reasonable measures. The burden of proof rests on the airline, not on you. Strikes by Gulf Air's own staff are generally not extraordinary; strikes by third parties such as controllers or ground handlers usually are. Routine technical faults discovered in normal maintenance are the airline's own responsibility.

## What happens when you claim from Gulf Air?

Save the booking reference, boarding passes and any messages announcing the disruption, and ask staff in writing for the reason. Claims go through the airline's own process, which may include identity or payment verification before money moves. We prepare and submit the claim, chase the response and, if it is refused without proper evidence, escalate to the national enforcement body or to court within the local time limit.

## Do you pay anything if the Gulf Air claim fails?

The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a fixed EUR 39 success fee — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600 — and the airline's payment goes to you. No win, no fee.

## How to claim Gulf Air compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded times for your Gulf Air flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

For the law behind the figure, the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation) covers arrival delays and the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation) covers a flight that never operated. If Gulf Air has already refused you, the [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts have said about the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### My Gulf Air flight from Bahrain to London landed four hours late. Am I owed anything?

Not under EU261 or UK261. Those rules cover flights departing an EU/EEA or UK airport, and arrivals from third countries only when the airline holds an EU or UK licence, which Gulf Air does not. The outbound London to Bahrain direction is covered; the inbound one is not, though Bahraini rules or your ticket conditions may still help.

### Gulf Air cancelled my Frankfurt departure a week before travel. What am I due?

A cancellation with less than 14 days' notice triggers compensation unless the airline proves an extraordinary circumstance, and Frankfurt to Bahrain exceeds 3,500 km, so the figure is EUR 600 per passenger. You are separately entitled to a refund or re-routing, and the compensation is paid on top of whichever you choose.

### Gulf Air blamed a technical fault. Does that end the claim?

Usually not. Technical problems that surface during the normal operation or maintenance of an aircraft are treated as part of running an airline, so they do not count as extraordinary circumstances. Only rare cases such as a hidden manufacturing defect or sabotage fall outside the airline's responsibility, and Gulf Air would have to prove it.
