# Emirates flight delay and cancellation compensation

Emirates is a UAE carrier, so EU261 and UK261 cover only its flights leaving an EU/EEA or UK airport — not arrivals from Dubai — worth up to EUR 600.

**Emirates flight delay** compensation **reaches** €600 per passenger, or £520 from the UK, on most departures from Europe. You qualify only when the flight leaves an EU/EEA or UK airport and reaches your final destination three or more hours late. Flights from Dubai into Europe fall outside both EU261 and UK261.

## Which Emirates flights do EU261 and UK261 cover?

Emirates is the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, built around its hub at **Dubai** and flying a long-haul network from there. It is **not an EU or UK carrier**, and that single fact decides where your rights reach.

Because Emirates holds no EU or UK licence, protection attaches to the **airport you departed from**, not to the airline:

- **Departing any EU/EEA airport on Emirates** — EU261 applies, as it does to any operating carrier leaving Europe.
- **Departing the UK on Emirates** — UK261, the retained British version of the rules, applies.
- **Arriving into the EU/EEA or the UK from Dubai** — **not covered**, because Emirates is not a Community carrier. Inbound flights need an EU airline under EU261, or a UK or EU airline under UK261.

So a Paris, Frankfurt or Manchester departure to Dubai is protected; the same aircraft flying Dubai to Paris is not. Most Emirates flying out of Europe is long-haul, which puts many claims in the top compensation band.

## How much is an Emirates flight delay from Europe worth?

The amount is set by the distance of the route, not the fare or the cabin, and each passenger with a confirmed booking claims separately.

- **EUR 250** — flights of 1,500 km or less
- **EUR 400** — flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km
- **EUR 600** — flights over 3,500 km, which covers most Emirates departures from Europe to Dubai and beyond

UK261 claims use the sterling bands of **GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520**. Under **Article 7(2)**, the airline may halve the top figure where a re-routed long-haul flight arrives less than four hours late, so the exact arrival time at your final destination matters.

## When Emirates doesn't have to pay

There is no compensation where the disruption was caused by **extraordinary circumstances** that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures — severe weather, air-traffic-control restrictions, airport closures, security alerts or a bird strike.

Two points are widely misunderstood:

- **The airline carries the burden of proof.** A one-line message citing "operational reasons" is an assertion, not evidence.
- **A strike by Emirates' own crew is generally not extraordinary**, while strikes by third parties — air-traffic controllers, airport handlers — usually are.

Routine technical faults found during ordinary maintenance normally remain the airline's responsibility.

## What should you keep to claim from Emirates?

Keep the booking reference, your boarding pass, and any message announcing the delay or cancellation. Ask, in writing, for the reason. For a missed connection, note the actual arrival time at your final destination.

We prepare and run the claim, follow it up and handle any appeal, and we tell you plainly if a defence looks likely to hold.

## What does an Emirates claim cost with us?

The eligibility check is free. If we recover your compensation we charge a **fixed EUR 39 success fee** — the same whether you're owed EUR 250 or EUR 600 — and the airline's payment goes to you. No win, no fee.

## How to claim Emirates compensation

Start with the flight itself. Our [free flight check](/claim) reads the recorded times for your Emirates flight and tells you which band it falls in, in about two minutes.

For the law behind the figure, the [flight delay compensation guide](/flight-delay-compensation) covers arrival delays and the [cancellation compensation guide](/flight-cancellation-compensation) covers a flight that never operated. If Emirates has already refused you, the [case law summary](/passenger-rights/case-law) sets out what the courts have said about the usual excuses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is my Emirates flight from Dubai back to London covered?

No. Emirates is a UAE carrier, not an EU or UK airline, so the inbound leg from Dubai into Europe falls outside both EU261 and UK261. Coverage attaches to the departure airport, so only the outbound leg leaving London, or any other EU/EEA airport, is protected.

### My Emirates flight from Europe was delayed more than three hours. What am I owed?

If it departed an EU/EEA or UK airport and you reached your final destination three or more hours late, you are likely owed a fixed sum set by distance — up to EUR 600, or GBP 520 for a UK departure. Because Emirates flies long-haul out of Europe, most eligible claims sit in the top band unless the cause was a genuine extraordinary circumstance the airline can prove.

### Does flying in Business or First change the Emirates compensation?

No. The compensation is fixed by route distance, not by cabin or ticket price, so a First Class passenger and an economy passenger on the same delayed flight are owed the same amount. It is paid on top of any refund you are separately entitled to, and it is not a refund of the fare.
